Photographers! I interrupt this blog…

by Darcy on March 4, 2010

in better blogging, photography

I interrupt this blog for a moment a shameless self-promotion. Please forgive me, I’m just so stinking excited. But I wouldn’t post it here, if I didn’t think I could save my photography friends some serious money.

Many of you know I am a graphic designer and a photographer. I often get requests for photo themes. Photographers want space for their photos, they want a slide-show header that fades to the next image without needing to know Adobe Flash. The problem? Most of those themes are SO expensive (I’m talking $200 per URL!) and that doesn’t include any custom design.

I wanted to make a theme available to photographers – both professional and aspiring photogs – that had all the features we love at a fraction of the cost. So the smart and talented folks at StudioPress and I teamed up. I designed everything I wanted in a Wordpress Photography theme, and they put it on the impressive Genesis Theme framework and worked their coding magic. The result is Pixel Happy – a child theme that photographers will love.

Here’s the best part. If you already have the Genesis theme, it’s only $24.95. (It’s okay, you can gasp!) If you don’t have Genesis yet, you can get both for $79.95. That cost is still less than half the photography theme I had been using for my clients prior. And it comes with all the hand-holding, coddling and support you need at the forums over at StudioPress.

If you’ve never worked with a child theme before, it can be a bit confusing at first. You’ll need to put both the Genesis theme and Pixel Happy Child theme in your wp-content>themes> directory, but only activate Pixel Happy from your WP Dashboard.

And in case it wasn’t obvious, I am a StudioPress designer and will profit from your purchase of Pixel Happy . I don’t want anyone to feel tricked. So THANK YOU for your purchase – now go make beautiful photography blogs!

Congratulations girl! That is spiffy. How awesome that you have been able to team up with StudioPress and that they are benefiting from your expertise as well. What a great savings to the photography community.

The less we spend on blogging, the more we can spend on lenses, right? And if StudioPress puts their name on it, you know it’s quality under the hood. :)

Thanks, Beth! Can’t wait to “spiffy” up your place.

Well it’s fairly obvious that I came by your post to say congratulations, and to say how proud and excited I am that we’re working together. Darcy, you have such an incredible talent with design, and I wholeheartedly believe that God placed you in my path, and me in yours for some very obvious (and not so obvious) reasons. StudioPress is certainly fortunate to have you designing for us now, and I’m so glad to know that a significant market for WordPress theme design will soon be inundated with beautiful designs. Here’s to a prosperous relationship!

very cool! i’m excited about that. i wish the forums had more detailed (maybe even video) explanation about the hook thingys. there are a couple of things i want to do like moving the comments to below the post and it requires a hook which i can’t for the life of me figure out.

Make sure you ask the question, I promise you’ll get a response. You’ll need to code a change in your functions.php file. It’s not a difficult change, but requires a remove_function from where it currently is, and an add_function to where you want it.

Melissa – hang in there, we are purposely leaving that documentation out for now. In Genesis 1.1 which should be available soon, we will include a plugin that will make things hookable through the dashboard and will be VERY easy to do.

This is awesome!! I am new to wordpress (more familiar with blogspot) and have been looking for something like this. I haven’t figured out how to change the theme other than what’s provided in the wordpress themes. I’ll get there, eventually, when I have time to play around a bit. This is awesome!

Reply

20 Darcy March 5, 2010 at 12:48 am

I know it’s really confusing when you’re new to wordpress, but you’re on wordpress.com. Themes like this aren’t available unless you’re on self-hosted wordpress.org. When people say “wordpress”, they really mean self-hosted wordpress org that requires hosting and gives full control of the themes and plug ins. I should have clarified in my post!

So the reason that you’ve been having trouble is because with wordpress.com, there is no access to the files to upload premium themes.

I often wish wordpress.com would have chosen a different name to make the differences more obvious. The good news is once you get set up with hosting and install wordpress(.org) – you can use any theme and have tons of choices for plug ins, layouts, features, etc.

It’s like comparing a point-n-shoot camera to a dSLR. ;)

Thanks for the comment!

Your photos make grown women cry.

@Ruthanne – best thing you can do is find a couple of really helpful Thesis bods that you’re able to work with, trust and who you’re happy to pay for their time – then use them for all your support. I completely agree that the forums can be scary, or just so difficult to get a straight answer unless one of the Nice Guys come along to help :-)
