My 8-Things-You-Should-Know-Before-Blissdom Post.

by Darcy on January 11, 2010

in miscellany

I have 475386572 posts in draft and not a single one of them got published. You can blame her, and her, and her, and him. ;)

Sooo, it’s 22 days until Blissdom and I know some of you are all in a flurry about it. I started a post like this in draft, then I saw Edie’s awesome post about it and knew I had something good for you all in the depths of my photo file.

1. Bring networking cards or business cards or moo cards or something for us to remember you after we’re back home and have swiss cheese brain.

There will be 500+ people there, and many conversations where you wish you could remember “that-nice-girl-from-that-one-workshop’s blog URL”. I came home from BlogHer with over 100 cards. Personally, moo cards make me crazy because they are just so losable. Is losable a word? Not-keep-track-able? Yeah, I lost those. The networking that takes place is the highlight at the conference. Plus it’s a total ice-breaker.

2. Twitter is a priceless networking tool before, during and after the conference.

Half the conference takes place simultaneously in under-currents online on twitter. Remember that awkward moment at BlogHer08? Everyone on twitter knew about it as it was happening live at the conference. When people had no idea who was speaking and what was going on, the whole situation was viral and the commentary was made, sides were taken, and the whole situation unfolded like a football game’s play-by-play. Yet, in the room… it was silent and kinda weirdly awkward and quiet. Plus you’re going to want to see the twitpics of me and Harry together, aren’t you?

3. Want to make friends easily? Bring a power strip.

A room full of laptops, but only a fraction of that number of outlets. You will be instantly popular if you offer a spot for others to plug in with you. And on that note – the peripheral of the room fills fast. Unlike some conferences where the front or the back is where the “cool kids hang” – at a conference it’s along the walls, near the power. The people in the middle either have amazing batteries or they came late. Or they don’t care, and like me and Ruthanne, just want to take your picture while we pretend we’re taking pictures of something else. (I totally outed you, Ruthanne.)

4. Don’t tackle the pro-bloggers all at once.

Remember that even though you know every last detail of some of the well-read blogger’s existences, 300 other people are also hoping for just two minutes of her time. That’s 10 hrs of just two minutes at a time. They often get tackled at first, so if you plan to approach your fav rock-star blogger on day 2 instead of the moment she walks through the door, she’ll probably be able to lend you more of her undivided attention.

5. Everyone is out of their element.

Inside me, is her:

Ghostbusters shirt, boy-mullet, Z-cavariccis, pre-braces awkward kid who hopes you all don’t think she’s still that dorky. But, here’s the secret. I still am totally that kid. Only now, I have a cool camera.

Trust me, we’re going to like you. I know a kid like that is inside you, too.

6. Say hi first.

For some of us, it’s much easier to tweet you, comment on Facebook, or read your blog than start a conversation. I write code and play Photoshop much of the day. Many Bloggers are WAHM parents, who spend more time wiping smudgy faces, folding socks and working online. All 500 of us at once can be a lot… so smile, say hi. I don’t bite. I do hide behind my camera though. It gives weirdos like me something to do with our hands. Shy does not mean unfriendly. Introvert does not mean snob. Some of your favorite bloggers are shy. I know, who knew?

7. Some of the best workshops are taking place before the conference even starts.

Yeah, it’s true. Expert bloggers from various niche fields are giving small-group workshops on stuff like photography, SEO, PR, photography (oh, wait did I already say that one?), graphic design, and coding. Those last two are mine. Please don’t make me stand up there alone with an empty room, ’cause that’d just be awkward. There are several to choose from, and this is a great way to get all those blogging questions answered. I will be spilling LOTS of graphic design tips, and speaking geek. Register at Eventbrite.

8. Mostly, this is the most important one. Back off Harry. He’s mine.

So glad we got that established.

ps – My hubby is coming to Blissdom. He is more social than I am and knows more people than I do, so I’m sure he won’t mind at all when I abandon him for Harry Connick, Jr. Now my hubby can’t say I rode his coat-tails the whole conference. Love ya’ Handy Man!

Um, yeah. So I am demanding. I am glad I am not the only one keeping you from posting on your blog. I’d feel more guilty if I was the only crazed blogger out there right now.

Great tips. Now after reading Edie’s awesome post and yours, I am going to publish my own thoughts. I am all inspired now to say something about Blissdom.

:-) Now get back to work. You have your work cut out for you.

Dude ~ Handyman’s coming to Blissdom. How did you swing that?! Or I should probably ask, “How did he swing that?” ;D

What is a moo card? I’m ignorant of such things.

What happened at Blogger08? I’m ignorant of that, as well.

I luuuurve you {even though you outed me *snort*}

A Moo card is a little networking card, kinda like a business card, only narrow. it’s like the same width, only about 1/3 the height. picture those fortune cookie papers. Like that.

Itty bitty networking.

He’ll be there. I hope he makes time for me with his busy social calendar all full and stuff. He’ll be with the photogs, doing whatever it is fabulous photogs do.

I totally did. :)

So, I’m reading this because I’m a glutton for punishment and enjoy making myself cry over the fact that I don’t get to go this year as planned.

HAVE FUN… and take a boatload of pictures of Justin Mati—oh wait, I mean Harry. Please and thank you.

That’s funny that you thought of Justin Matisse. I loved that character. My favorite movie is “PS – I Love You.” and his HCJ’s Daniel is priceless. We watch that movie a lot here, late at night for background noise.

Hope you can come next year.

Welp, due to a pretty awesome change of plans… I get to go. :) So you might just have a little more competition for Justin/Daniel/Harry after all. ;)

(Also, I’m watching PS–I Love You tonight, as a matter of fact.)

I love you even more because I definitely think we could be long-lost-separated twins with the mullet and the Ghostbusters tshirt for sure! Great tips :) Especially the power strip thing! And I’m definitely going to say hi to you when I get there :D I’m an introvert too though – so not sure anyone else may get a hey from me!!

Um, unless you plan on visiting Harry in my and Stiletto Mom’s room, I am afraid he’s gonna be a tad BUSY (SINGING TO US-sheesh!). Great idea on the power strip though – we had to take turns plugging in at one table last year. Of course it’s a great way to get to know your neighbors!!

Thanks so much for the tips! LOVE the one about the power strip. I will definitely pick one up! This will be my first year and I’m super excited…but also a little nervous!

Great post! :)

Oh, and you’re going to know it’s me when I come up to you and say, “Um…yeah, uh, Darcy? It’s, um, me — Angie. I know we’ve talked a ton online, and um, you know, we have…you know…talked a lot. But, well, this is weird in person and all.”

LOL ;) Okay, I’m not really that bad. (I don’t think.) But, we’ll see.

I had to come back and tell you how impressed I am with your husband’s photography blog. Oh my! I think the last time I saw it he was just starting out and had 2 pics or so. He’s fabulous! You’ll have to tell him I said so. Love all his portrait pics too. K, that’s all. :)

Someday, somehow, I hope to be able to meet you in person, and when that day comes, I will remember this picture of you in your Ghostbuster’s shirt and it will give me the courage to come and shake your hand you. :) You are the best, Darcy.

Thanks for the tip on the moo card. I had never heard of it before. So I’ve got dorky AND out-of-the-loop going for me. And I’m okay with that… it makes me approachable, right?

Any rec’s on a site to use to make said business cards? It’s been on my to-do list for a long time and somehow never makes it to the top. But I realize that I am running out of time!

I can’t wait to see you there! Even if you’re ditching us for Handyman.

#1
I am totally trying to go. I hope I can go. I am going to beg DH to let me go.

#2
I don’t speak geek but I so want to…

#3
I have no idea what Moo cards are.

#4
Its probably just as well that I don’t know what Moo Cards are, because whenever I go to the Homeschool convention I bring calling cards and HOTM business cards—-and then get too shy to pass them out! I’m horrible. What do you do with people like me?

26 Talysa January 12, 2010 at 11:45 pm

I really love these tips! Would love a “what to pack” list….still not sure the flow of the conference such as changing of clothes (how many changes) and the whole cocktail party thing…(totally intimidated) …I never would have thought of the cards to bring or a power strip! This newbie needs help! ;-)

I love this post. I love Life in Grace’s post, too – but for some reason, it says she’s moving on her blog and I couldn’t find her new digs. Did you link her wrong?

Anyway, my fave Harry song is “Tangerine”. ;) I think you’ll have to share him with a lot of other drooling middle-aged women. LOL

I am soooooooooooooo hoping to go. Please keep praying!

LOVE YOU – HOPE I CAN HUG YOUR NECK!!!!

Anyway, I know your workshop is going to be awesome!

Hi Darcy! I hope we meet at Blissdom.

How many cards to you recommend I take? Over a hundred, I guess, right?

I see that a lot of people have Pokens. I got a ticket transfer very late so I haven’t received my welcome packet and don’t know if I’ll have one there. I presume poken contact exchanges might replace some of the biz card exchanges?
