Review & Giveaway: My Read & Rhyme Bible Storybook

by Darcy on August 28, 2009

in Trouble, give away

(edit: This give away has ended. Subscribe so you don’t miss the next one!)

I have to start by saying that Trouble so rarely ever gets anything that is just his. Mostly, he is a hand-me-down kid; hand-me-down clothes, hand-me-down toys, hand-me-down books and hand-me-down curriculum. So when I told him something came in the mail just for him, well… you can see his reaction…

bible review-30 bible review-26

This is pretty like the spider book and the ABC cards,” he told me as he flipped through, naming people.

I thought that was pretty observant because both the “spider book” (The Very Busy Spider) and his ABC Cards were illustrated by Eric Carle. My Read & Rhyme Bible Storybook is illustrated by Christiane Engel, but to my little guy, the images were similar enough in style to make an association. Isn’t he clever?

Since its arrival we’ve tackled one story a day from the beginning. They like the artwork, I like the vocabularly, pronounciation and discussion questions. My littlest guy can rhyme the words in the rhyming section (usually at TOP VOLUME, he screams the answers!), and the discussion questions have prompted some interesting thoughts – esp from my somewhat reluctant-to-share 7 year old. The activities range from writing to coloring to having a parade.

Theologically, the stories all rhyme, so it’s not even close to a verbatum bible story. I don’t know how you feel about that, but for these little boys, it’s just the right amount of story with lesson. If strict adherence to quotes and passages is your thing, this isn’t your book. If you want your kids to understand the stories in a language they can relate to, this is much more on target.

Here’s is an except so you can see how they stuck to the message, while still making the poems rhyme:

Jesus Teaches the People (Matthew 5:1-12)
Jesus climbed a mountain.
He had a lot to say.
People came to listen.
They came a long, long way.

“Blessed are the poor.
The Kingdom will be theirs.
So if you have no money,
just trust in God who cares.

“Blessed are the people
whose hearts are very sad.
God will love and comfort them
so they won’t feel so bad.

“Blessed are the humble
and those who really care.
All the earth will soon be theirs,
a gift from God to share.”

We like this book. Trouble is so pleased with himself as he SHOUTS answers. I appreciate hearing my older boys’ opinions on the questions. And since the book asks them (and not mom), it’s much more “official”. If I had to find a criticism, it would be: the characters seem predominantly lighter-skinned. I think this book is best for preK to 3rd grade. RA for prek – 2nd, IR for 3rd and up. Cover price, $17.99.

The expressions on his face in the pics ~ adorable! *grin*

I’m the oldest of three siblings, so there really wasn’t anyone to hand things down to me ~ though I vaguely remember occasional bags of clothes that came along, I think from an older cousin… mostly though, I was the first ~ and didn’t really have anyone to hand *my* stuff down to either, because my brother (2.5 years younger) didn’t want my clothes/books/toys/etc (understandable LOL) and my sister was eight years younger – nothing fit/interested/was okay for her. Wait ~ I think she got my Barbies. And maybe the My Little Ponies. :-)

I look forward to seeing Trouble’s wedding pictures and how he incorporates his medal with his tuxedo. ;D

I was NOT a handy-man kid because . . . I’m the baby and the only girl. Yea! It totally rocked. Except for one my brothers put their smelly, old socks on my face while I was sleeping. That didn’t rock.

My daughter would love this book. She’s also one to shout out the answers. Love that!

I was the oldest, so I was lucky enough to not be a hand-me down kid. My daughter (middle kid) absolutely loves it when she gets hand-me down clothes from friends of ours. She thinks it’s the neatest thing to get bags of clothes all at once and “go shopping” thru them. Our youngest daughter then fights over them with her because SHE wants to wear them. Sigh….they’re not even teenagers yet!

Did Trouble get new glasses? We got the boys some Rec Specs prescription sunglasses and LOVE them – wondered about doing them for their “real” glasses.

PS on the hand-me-downs, I was the ONLY girl with three brothers (and the oldest!) so I got whatever I wanted. :)

Kara

Reply

18 Darcy August 29, 2009 at 1:15 pm

Hi Kara :)

He loves the Rec Specs more than his regular glasses. Occasionally he asks to wear the others, but he pretty much has decided to wear these all the time. I think it’s because the other pair got a scratch across the lens less than 24 hrs after we got them, and there is no lens policy (go figure!). I like that these stay on when he trips, or slip when he runs around.

They’re very durable. Handy Man was worried that he might get teased, but most kids who comment have said very nice things about his glasses. He’s had them since May, I think, and so far so good… :)

Oldest of 9 so I got the new stuff and then handed things down the line. I did have younger sisters that would sneak clothes from me. Later I’d find the items scrunched up in a wad at the back of my closet, often with stains on them. Grrr…. :)

That looks like a fun book!

I was a hand-me-down kid. Youngest child of the youngest child means I got my brother’s hand-me-downs and my female cousins’ hand-me-downs.

Reply

I was the youngest of seven, so I should have gotten hand-me-downs.
But… I was the only girl, so I should have gotten new clothes.
But… we were not wealthy and we had lots of friends with girls just older than me, so I got lots of hand-me-downs. But I never cared, because they were all new to me!

What a cute Bible! My girls (4yo and 21mos) LOVE Bibles. We like to read the same story out of several different ones. This would be a perfect addition to our (small) collection.

I was a firstborn so I guess all my stuff was new. My girls, however, are all hand-me-down kids.

I was the oldest, so not many hand-me-downs for me. We’ve been blessed with hand-me-downs for our kids, though. This book looks really sweet- our 3 1/2 year old daughter would love to have her own Bible, especially since his big brother is getting his own as part of our curriculum this year.

Trouble is just too much! I love his pictures, I mean, really- he’s so cool, he always wears sunglasses. My kinda kid.

Yes! I was a total hand me down child, and I didn’t mind it one bit. My daughter gets a few hand me downs, and it’s the highlight of her day, esp. if her little friends give her their fancy shoes! That is another good thing about her being so tiny, her friends give her their outgrown clothes!

My lil’ ladies would love this book! They enjoy trying to rhyme words and sometimes it is very interesting to hear the words they have learn to rhyme:)

I was the youngest in my family, but I had all older brothers and I was an oops, so I did not receive hand-me-downs.

I love the format of this book. I think the general idea and message behind stories in the Bible are more important than just memorizing scripture (but that’s just me – not intended to offend). Myself, I was the first born so I received things new. But I understand the hand-me-down child. My 3rd fall in that category and I can count on my hands the number of things that are just hers. (love the pictures by the way and great review)
Cheers

I can see why he thought the artwork was similar to Eric Carle’s great stuff.

Also, I was an combo of hand-me-down and new. I had three older brothers, but I was the first girl. And I was my mom’s first kid (the guys are my bruthas from anutha mutha — aka: my father’s first marriage). So I got t-shirts and jeans and jerseys, but I also got new dresses and shiny shoes. Kind of a win-win, really!

Reply

46 Daisy August 29, 2009 at 8:30 am

I was the oldest of 2 girls so I got most everything new, but most everything, at least the nice stuff, were things my Mom had hand-made for me. THEN, they were passed down to my younger sister. The hand-made stuff was prettier but I know now it was much cheaper! lol! I think I probably wore things my Mom made WAY too long, much longer than my friends for sure.
We have the Jesus Storybook Bible, and we’ve gone through it a million times. My 4 year old daughter would LOVE this. If we don’t win, I’ll definitely go purchase. Thanks for the tip. I love your site and your husband’s photography!

I was definitely a hand-me-down kid. But then I became the one kid in the family who loved to read, and my parents signed me up for the Weekly Reader Children’s Book Club. I remember being so excited when those packages would come addressed to ME. Wow.

Please enter me in the drawing. I love the sound of this book (and by the way, if that passage from the Beatitudes is a good sample, I’d say the theology is pretty sound). My own boys are a bit old for this, but I would love to share this with my niece and nephew.

This book looks terrific!

I was the youngest of 5 (4 girls), so had my share of hand-me-downs. However, my family moved from Bangladesh to New York when I was 3 1/2, so most of the really old stuff got left behind and we started fresh in New York – so it wasn’t all bad! :)
