I’ve had at least a dozen loaves fold in on themselves and become dense, yeasty masses…
I’ve had a dozen more bake themselves out of the Breadman – expanding out of the pan, making a big, fluffy dough mess all over the machine.
But, I’ve finally nailed down the perfect loaf. It took nearly 6 months… but I’ll save you all the trouble and mess of all those failed loaves.
This recipe makes: 2 lb loaf, whole wheat rapid setting, medium crust
To the machine, add the ingredients in the order they are listed:
The Boybarians’ favorite bread:
1 1/2 c warm water
1/2 c veg oil (olive oil works great!)
1/3 c honey -or- molasses
2 tsp vinegar
1 1/2 tsp salt
1/2 c raw quick oats
1/4 c ground flaxseed
1/4 c gluten
1 1/2 c wheat flour
1 c bread flour (can substitute all purpose flour, if needed)
2 tsp yeast
Isn’t that gorgeous? And it is… soooooo… good! If you’d like to try this recipe, now is a great time to try out that fancy little print button down there. if you make it, come back and tell me how it goes. Whatever you do, don’t taint my boys’ bread with nasty fake margarine stuff.
Only the real butter will do.

That is some gorgeous dough! I would never taint it with anything less than real butter.
Now I’m hungry and it’s all your fault.
Yum. I love making my own bread (and, like you, it took me quite some time to figure out what the perfect recipe for me was), but it never lasts long enough! If I make homemade bread, it’s gone within a day or so. Not good for a low-carb existence!
that is some tasty looking bread, there!!! i def would eat it all!
Your boys love homemade bread, too? Mine will devour a loaf like you wouldn’t believe. I can’t wait to try this recipe!
So sorry you didn’t quite get all the 2nd of July pics you wanted. . . but the ones you got were FANTASTIC! Wow. Double wow.
That looks good and I think I have all the ingredients in my pantry.
YIPEEE!!! You finally found the “magic” recipe! That looks really good! I will have to go dig out my bread maker!!
Gasp! Would someone really put margarine on that beauty?!?
Say it’s not so! ;D
Ok – so could you just go ahead and figure out the ratios xs 5. K. Thanks.
That looks so yummy! I was making our own bread this past winter but since summer has hit haven’t done it. You’ve inspired me! I don’t have a bread maker but I’m sure I could do this recipe by hand.
Looks scrumptious! I was wondering what kind of bread machine you have. Would you recommend it?
Hi Heather!
I have a Breadman Plus. The ones they make now are pretty fancy, but mine is plain old 10-year-old model that’s still plugging away. I do like my machine, but I would love to find a machine that can do 3 lb loaves. We go through a loaf in 1-2 days, so I have to bake every-other-day. I may either adapt this recipe for the oven so can double it… or look for a larger loaf machine when (if!) this one dies. But yes – it works beautifully. Bakes evenly. No complaints about the machine – my boys are big bread eaters – it just seems this capacity too small for our growing boys.
Thanks for stopping by.
looks delicious…
i was trying to comment in an earlier post..but had no success earlier today…
i had a question..
is it possible to upload google friend connect on wordpress.com?
I tried unsuccessfully..
I am so glad you shared this recipe b/c I was going to ask you for it anyway! I have been working on ours as well. It’s coming along but not there yet. Can’t wait to try yours!
Hugs!
Oh that looks delish!! I made a wonderful whole wheat honey bread dough last week (I always make buns though, my three boys like buns so much better than bread!!) and now I think I’ll have to try yours and compare the two – thanks for the recipe!
Hi Darcy!
That is beautiful bread! There is still half a loaf of my own homemade bread on the counter, I think I’ll go have another piece…it doesn’t look as pretty but it’ll taste good!
Lee
PS Blog looks beautiful too!
