Happy Pretend Independence Day

by Darcy on July 3, 2009

For some reason, Des Moines decided to celebrate the 4th of July on the 2nd of July. It was a nice warm up for Saturday. The boys were tolerant models while we waited in our coveted spot until dark.

And – like a bad predictable movie – my memory card beeped full about 45 seconds before the finale.

It’s okay. You can laugh.

Lovely photos! I’ve seen places celebrate stuff early before if the actual holiday was going to fall on a day that was problematic in some fashion – I remember our old town doing Halloween on a different day when it actually fell on a Friday or Saturday, so as to avoid some of the trouble often associated with it that might have been tripled with it being a ‘party’ night, y’know? Could that have been why Des Moines did that?

Lovely fireworks shots. I would take it any night. The kids don’t really know the difference anyway.

Great shots! Any tips on capturing fireworks? We’re going to attempt to see real fireworks tonight…the kids have said they’re not scared anymore. We’ll see.

What a gorgeous night it looks like it was!! Your extended winters might be miserable, but gosh, your summers look glorious. Love the shot of Handyman/Bday setting up.

I’m still debating whether or not I’ll bring “my precious” and tripod to the park tomorrow night -it’s about a 1.5 mile walk, uphill both ways (oh wait, just one way … I was flashing back to all my dad’s old stories about his tromp to school, in the snow, uphill ….).

Weekend blessings to you all… [as we celebrate the few remaining liberties we possess, before they’re taken away … yikes! who spiked my coffee this morning?!? I don’t get politic on the great wide internet!!)

Hi Sonja,
Thank you! The portraits were shot with a 55mm lens on a Nikon d700. The fireworks were shot with a 24-70mm lens on a Nikon d700.

I’d love to see your blog! What’s the URL?

Those shots of the fireworks are awesome! Yet, my fave shot of all is the one of the boys. They’re all getting to be so tall and handsome! It’s a little disconcerting how fast that happens, isn’t it?

Wow, look at you and those pictures. Amazing. Oh and it helps when you have such beautiful things to take pictures of. Handsome little men you have there. Talk soon. Cheers.
